Klyde Warren Park Joins Laura Bush and Texan by Nature to Help Monarch Butterflies

DALLAS, TEXAS (APRIL 19, 2017) – Klyde Warren Park announced today that it is being designated a “Monarch Wrangler” and entering a partnership with former First Lady Laura Bush and her Texan by Nature organization. The park is the first park in Dallas-Fort Worth to take part in the broader initiative that seeks to conserve and create essential habitats for the rapidly declining population of monarch butterflies.

As a designated Monarch Wrangler, Klyde Warren Park will:

  • Plant 350 milkweed plants throughout the 5.2-acre deck park, 200 of which were donated by Monarch Watch
  • Add free monarch migration educational programming, including seedball-making and butterfly tagging
  • Remove any invasive plant species from the park

“Texas is a thriving central flyway for monarch butterflies, and Klyde Warren Park happens to be at the center of their migration route,” said Mrs. Bush. “On behalf of Texan by Nature, we are thrilled to have the park and its guests join us in our efforts to protect this important pollinator.”

The Monarch Wrangler program is led by Texan by Nature, an organization founded in 2011 by former First Lady and Texas-native Mrs. Bush. Texan by Nature seeks to align the broad interests of conservation groups with business, health care, schools and faith-based organizations, and scientific communities in order to spur Texan-led conservation initiatives. Klyde Warren Park joins several organizations across the state in the Monarch Wrangler program.

“Klyde Warren Park is free and open for everyone, including monarch butterflies!” said Tara Green, president of Klyde Warren Park. “It’s in our DNA to provide a safe environment for everyone, and this includes the Monarch butterflies. We are happy to contribute to the welfare of these beautiful and important creatures. I know they will continue to add beauty to the park for many years to come.”

Thanks to a generous donation from Cindy and Bill Ward, long-time supporters of Klyde Warren Park, milkweed plants will be planted at the end of April and free monarch programming will begin later this year. For more information and a schedule of events, visit klydewarrenpark.org.
